The power of earth – Advantages of natural fibers

SANVT Journal

Replacing natural fibers. Why do synthetic fabrics exist?

Natural fibers often have negative characteristics. For example, linen tends to wrinkle and cotton clothing dries slowly. Wool is also a well-known example of a natural fibre with a downside because it scratches. Therefore, the textile innovators of the time decided to try and override the negative and unchangeable properties of natural fibers, with the help of chemistry.

Synthetic fibers are produced by various, complex processes and can be put together perfectly. Therefore, they rarely tend to wrinkle, shrink or scratch. Blended fabrics made of natural and man-made fibers are also particularly popular. By combining them, the positive properties of natural fabrics can be used, and the negative ones can be balanced.

What natural fibers are there?

Natural fibers are fibers that come from natural sources such as plants, animals, or minerals and can be used directly without further meddling. Chemical applications can and should therefore be dispensed within the manufacturing process. Although innovative natural fibers, such as Tencel Modal, have constantly come onto the market in recent years, only five materials are considered to count as the main natural fibers:

Why nature instead of chemistry?

Environmental friendliness

Natural fibers are much more sustainable than synthetic ones. In production, cultivation, and manufacturing, they do not harm our environment. Moreover, they are not hazardous to the health of the people who work with them. But even after processing, they are much more environmentally friendly than man-made fibers. Since synthetic fabrics like polyester release microplastics into the water during the washing process, synthetics harm not only nature and wildlife, but also us humans with regard to the water cycle.

Biodegradable

In their basic state, all natural fibers are 100% biodegradable. This means that through the decomposition process, the material completely dissolves into carbon, oxygen, hydrogen, and further minerals. The fiber leaves no waste and reconnects with nature.

Longer durability

Natural fibers are usually more durable and therefore last longer for their wearer than synthetic fabrics. So, thanks to their high durability, you can wear them frequently without them being damaged or showing any defects. However, it is also important to take proper care of your essentials. For example, our SANVT products, which are made of 100% natural fibers, should only be washed at a maximum of 40 degrees and left to air dry inside out.

Skin compatibility

Materials such as cotton, linen, or hemp are particularly friendly to the skin and even suitable for allergy sufferers. Since natural fibers usually have better air permeability and breathability, bacteria are less likely to accumulate. Thus, your skin is not only protected but also unpleasant odors (e.g. sweat) are prevented. However, when buying natural clothing, always pay attention to the finishing process. The garments should of course not be chemically bleached or dyed to be optimal for your skin.

Chris Fraas enjoys wearing our sustainable essentials made from natural fibers, as they are much softer and more comfortable than synthetic clothing.

We think it’s crystal clear why you should choose fashion made from natural fibers. That’s why we invite you to take a look at our collection. Instead of chemicals, we rely on the natural power of our earth and make clothing from 100% environmentally friendly materials.

And to counteract fast-moving trends, we have also focused on the production of sustainable basics. A minimalist design, a perfect fit, and a climate-neutral production in Portugal ensure long durability and make your SANVT essentials companions for the whole year.
