Heavyweight vs. Classic Merino Wool

Paulina Kulczycki

Merino wool is, without question, a winter essential. Few natural fibres manage to keep you quite so warm while still feeling genuinely comfortable. Yet, much like cotton or traditional wool, merino can be knitted in different ways, creating distinct textures with very different characteristics. And while we at SANVT already offered fine-knit merino jumpers, we have now introduced a chunky knit jumper made from heavyweight merino. That’s why we’re comparing heavyweight vs. classic merino wool, helping you decide which knit better suits your needs and your personal style.

If there’s one fabric we’d happily wear from head to toe throughout winter, it’s merino wool. Super Geelong merino wool, to be precise. This fibre comes exclusively from the first shearing of young lambs up to five months old, making it exceptionally fine to the touch. Its ultra-soft feel, reminiscent of cashmere, is one of the defining qualities of Super Geelong merino wool, as the delicate fibres sit gently against the skin without itching. These exceptionally fine fibres also create a natural sheen, an elegant drape and an impressive softness that remains intact even after many washes. At the same time, the wool stands out for its durability, quality and comforting warmth. This makes Super Geelong merino wool one of the finest and highest-quality merino fibres in the world.

At SANVT, we use exclusively RWS-certified Super Geelong merino wool from Australia and place animal welfare front and centre by completely avoiding mulesing, ensuring our products are not only environmentally conscious but also ethically produced. On top of that, our merino jumpers are hand-knitted fairly in Portugal, and any unavoidable CO₂ emissions are offset through ClimatePartner and targeted tree-planting initiatives. But beyond how our merino products are made, the question remains: what actually sets heavyweight merino apart from classic merino, aside from the weight, of course?

Classic Merino Knit

The classic SANVT merino jumper is a true essential for men who value a clean look and versatility. Thanks to its fine knit and smooth, almost cashmere-like surface, it feels understated yet precise. It sits close to the body without feeling restrictive, subtly enhancing a clean silhouette. This is exactly what makes it the ideal companion for moments that call for a polished appearance without tipping into formality. Whether at the office, out for dinner or on the move, this merino jumper integrates effortlessly into a modern, minimalist wardrobe. It looks particularly refined in grey, paired with heavyweight black chinos in winter and finished with a long wool coat or tailored blazer. Discreet leather shoes or suede boots complete the look. Classic merino knit is the right choice for men who favour understatement and want a jumper that works seamlessly across almost any outfit.

Heavyweight Merino Knit

The heavyweight merino knit jumper from SANVT takes a deliberately more distinctive path. The chunky knit adds volume and depth, giving the piece visible and tangible substance. It feels robust without ever being coarse, conveying an easy confidence. The subtle sheen elevates the overall look, while the dense knit delivers reliable warmth, especially on colder days. This jumper is less about formal settings and more at home in relaxed outfits where style and comfort carry equal weight. In everyday wear, at weekends or while travelling, it pairs effortlessly with high-quality jeans or corduroy trousers. Trench coats, bomber jackets or field jackets work particularly well on top. Finish the look with premium leather trainers, such as a heritage runner. Heavyweight merino knit represents smart-casual dressing that feels confident, relaxed and intentional.

Heavyweight vs. Classic Merino Wool: Conclusion

When compared directly, heavyweight and classic merino knits reveal that, despite their differing personalities, they are built on the same foundation of quality. Both jumpers share the same premium fibre base, the same precise craftsmanship and the same commitment to durability and comfort. They regulate body temperature effectively, feel pleasant on the skin and perform season after season without losing shape or relevance. The decisive difference lies not in the material itself, but in how it’s woven and designed.

Classic merino knit translates merino wool into a pared-back, almost technical elegance. It’s lighter, closer to the body and visually calmer, making it exceptionally versatile and easy to integrate into more structured outfits. Heavyweight merino knit, on the other hand, uses the same fibre to create volume, depth and presence. It’s warmer, more tactile and intentionally designed as a standalone statement piece, not merely an addition, but a defining element. While one works quietly in the background, the other confidently takes centre stage.

What both share is a design philosophy that’s not driven by fleeting trends, but by function and longevity. They don’t chase seasonal hype; they serve a clear purpose: to look good, feel good and last. The difference is simply how and when you wear them. Light or heavy, precise or bold, elegant or relaxed. Anyone curating their wardrobe with intention will ultimately want both premium essentials for a confident, considered winter wardrobe.
